Black, White and a little Red.

Linda at flourishingpalms reminded me indirectly, to get on and post something. 😍 Thanks Linda for the push I needed.

My latest finish is a quilt for my Son & DIL in Brisbane, Australia. I started this mid 2021, but have just finished it. I had my friend Judi Schon in Auckland machine quilt it and I love the circley design, we decided on.

The pattern was free, but I think it's a paid for pattern now. It is called Twirla by Butterfly Threads.

Back of the quilt

I made it larger than the pattern. The request was 100 " wide and 84 " length to accommodate the footboard. I took the quilt to our local group meeting, so I could get the girls to hold it up for a photo, as it was too big for my floor space.

A 21st Birthday Gift

One of our dear grand-daughters has just had her 21st birthday and I decided it was time for a new quilt for her. She is an outdoorsy kinda girl, so I thought no frilly light colors for her. Her and her partner also live with their doggy child, so I thought something rustic would work.

I purchased some flannel plaids and using the Oh My Stars idea from Pat Sloan, I made this quilt. I cut my squares bigger than Pat's pattern and also made the quilt quite a bit larger ( of course :)

The quilt measured approx. 74"square

I cut my squares 6.5" Then worked out the sizes for my triangles.

Below is some of the back of the quilt.

Quilted on my 710 domestic Bernina.

After backing the quilt with some older flannel I had in my stash, and using bamboo batting, I found the quilt was quite heavy, but very cuddly.

I used plain cotton for the star points and the binding.

Hi everyone

I can't believe it is so long since I posted. I knew it was awhile, but never dreamed it was so many months ago.

I have been very busy making a very large quilt.

I managed to sneak down to my studio every morning at about 6am, so I didn't wake my DH to make a block, which took some time. No templates, just cutting random sizes to end up with a 16" block. Totally unplanned scrappy.

I also bought a Mystery Quilt kit from Quilters Lane in NZ. I don't normally buy kits, but as I loved the Anna Maria Horner fabrics, and am not used to this style of using bold fabrics, I thought it was a good way to get started. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting the fabric, PRECUT I might add, each month, and stitching them up, not knowing how it would end up.

This is as far as I have got, putting the blocks together, as the baby quilts had to be made first!

In the meantime, I have been knitting and have made these little gifts for my Great Grand-daughter, due in April.

I have also made these six bibs, which turned out pretty good. Right and wrong side showing.

An update: I found out 6 months ago, that two grand-daughters are expecting babies. The youngest girl due in late March, and her older sister due in April.

So, I had to get on with making a couple of baby quilts. I don't go to alot of effort for these, as I hope they will get thrashed in the washing machine. Their first bed quilts I take alot of time and effort over.

Close up of the back.

 Backs of the quilts

I ended up making 3 baby quilts, so now have one in storage until needed.

The babies have been born, so I will write about that next time.

Bye for now

Sue

Life is Ticking Along

There seems to be a run on new babies in our family. My sister's 3rd great grandchild arrived, and is a lovely healthy little girl.  I used some of my pastels, of which I don't have many, and made her a cot quilt.

  It measures approx. 40" x 48"

I love making these scrappy backs, which uses up more of the stash and orphan blocks.

Sorry about the photo quality, and although this quilt hadn't been folded long, it seems to have kept the fold line.

The local quilt group I am in makes cushions for the Heart patients at the city hospital. These 14" cushions are held against the chest when they have to cough after surgery. They get to take them home and use them under their seat belt in the car.
I managed to make 8 from my stash. Obviously they have to have inserts.

My friend and neighbor and walking mate for 15 years has just moved to another town which is great for them, but not for me. :-(
I wanted to give her a quilt, for her bed, and decided 30's stars was the one.

She had packed up most of the house, but I wanted a photo of it on her bed.

I have just finished piecing and appliqueing   'Don't Leaf Me' by Wendy Williams
I did this using Invisible machine appliqueing for the stems and leaves, and hand applique for the felt flowers.

Thanks everyone for dropping by.

Would love to hear from you, so please leave a comment. 😉💓

Happy Days but very hot...

I intended finishing my Mystery Quilt by Bonnie Hunter, for my Grand-daughters wedding quilt, but then realised I had to add at least 15"to each side. They have a very large bed, and I wanted to make the quilt usable instead of just something that is put in the cupboard.

This was made from scraps, and I decided it was too a big job to add so many borders to it, in the style I wanted, so I will finish it for our bed, which is a bit smaller, and I will make a different quilt for Chantelle and Conrad.  They asked for Grey, Black, White and/or blue.

I am making the big stars block from Missouri Star Quilt company.  The blocks measure 24.5".  The wedding is on the 25th April, so these big blocks will grow quickly.

Not pieced together yet, just on the design wall. Prepping all the pieces to take to retreat this coming weekend...YAY!

Also at night I am making the felt flowers for my Don't Leaf Me quilt, by Wendy Williams. I love the fabrics in this quilt. I am machine appliqueing this, which is out of the norm for me, but I'm enjoying the process!

Off to a wedding

The sun is shining, and the day promises to be lovely for my sister's grand-daughters wedding. We drove down from Auckland on Tuesday morning. As a rule when we leave home, we padlock the farm gate. About 10 k's from home, I said to DH ...why is the padlock on the coffee cup holder?

So...turn around we did and headed back to lock the gate!
We had a good trip down to Taupo, although at Drury both of us, thought the other had paid for the fuel, when we stopped for a coffee.  Half way down the motorway, I said...I hope you paid for the fuel?  No was the reply, you always do it!!  Thank goodness for cell phones. After ringing them, they told us to pay at their sister fuel station in Taupo, and they would ring ahead and tell them.

We stayed the night in Taupo, then after breakfast, we headed off to Napier. Lovely weather again, and lunch and a wander around the fishing port, ended the day nicely.

We headed off for Masterton, and all in all the trip was fine, although by the time we arrived in Masterton, we had picked up a bolt off the road, and we had a flat tyre.  Another drama, but thanks to a lovely young man, my nephew Richard, all was sorted.

Before we came down I decided it was time to use some of my scraps to make a string quilt as per the challenge set out by Lori of Humble Quilts. Unfortunately I couldn't carry along with the monthly stages, as once started I wanted to keep going to finish it to bring down and gift to my niece.

Progress at retreat.

Back home on the design wall and deciding on the setting triangles.

A large stipple on the main body of the quilt. Differential feed as per my Bernina in the triangles.

The two smaller photos of the binding, are more colour correct than the larger photo of the entire quilt.

A part photo of the back of the quilt. I found the purple and gold cats fabric in my stash, and decided it was perfect. Joanna loves cats and has four!

We are staying with my sister and I had to take a photo of the wall hanging I made her in 1999 in the days before smart phone photos.

and the wallhanging made for her in 2006

This was made from a pattern designed by the Cloth Shop.

Tomorrow we are heading back to Taupo, so must away to bed.
